How to Clean a Computer System Unit

A clean computer is a happy computer, as dust, dirt, and grime can lodge within the system to cause additional heat buildup, resulting in premature wear to your system hardware. Cleaning your computer should be done every few months, keeping your system from experiencing overheating symptoms such as bluescreens, random crashes or hardware failures.

Step 1

Turn off your computer.

Step 2

Remove the screws on the rear of the case with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

Slide off the side panel.

Use compressed air to dust the inside of the case, spraying into the processor fan, video card fan, case fans, power supply, and near the hard drive bay to remove dust.

Step 5

Tilt the keyboard on its side and use compressed air to blow dust and debris out of it. Wipe it down afterward with a clean cotton cloth.

Step 6

Use your small computer vacuum to suck up the dislodged dust and debris from the bottom of the case.

Step 7

Wipe down the inside and outside of the computer case with a cotton cloth to remove any other accumulated filth from the machine.
