How to Disable the Touchpad on a Lenovo

Disabling the touchpad becomes necessary when it malfunctions and prevents the proper use of your mouse. It can also present problems if the pad is too sensitive or any of the mouse keys get stuck.

Luckily Lenovo laptops have a built in keyboard shortcut you can use to disable the touchpad, or you can use the settings in Windows to disable it when an external mouse is connected.

Using Windows

Step 1

Open your start menu and click "Control Panel."

If you don't see it, look under the "Settings" menu.

Step 2

Double-click the "Mouse" icon.

Step 3

Look for the word "Touchpad" in the tabs at the top and click it.

Step 4

Look for a checkbox labeled "Disable Touchpad when external pointing device is present" or something aptly named. Make sure it's checked.

Step 5

If you want to disable the touchpad regardless of whether a mouse is connected, look for a "Disable Touchpad" option.

Step 6

Press OK to save your settings.

Using the keyboard shortcut

Step 1

Start your computer and log in to your operating system.

Press and hold the Fn key, then press the F8 key.

Fn + F6 is another common shortcut you can try if the one above doesn't work.

Step 3

To enable the touchpad use the keyboard shortcut again.
