You can keep your current cell phone number when getting a new prepaid phone by transferring, or "porting," an existing number. You can typically complete this process using an online form or over the phone, depending on your cell phone provider. However, you will need specific information to verify that the phone is valid and your current number is eligible to be transferred.

Step 1

Remove the battery cover for the phone and locate the IMEI, or MEID, number that is listed beneath the battery.

Call the customer support number for your cell phone provider. Select the option for "Activate a New Phone" from the menu.

Enter the IMEI or MEID number for your phone when prompted by the automated system. Enter your cell phone number when prompted. Wait for a customer support representative to come on the line.

Step 4

Provide information about your phone when asked. This will include the IMEI/MEID number and the cell phone number to port. Provide your date of birth and last four digits of your Social Security number to verify your account information.

Allow at least 24 hours for the request to be completed.
